Brother brand name may be associated not only with the sewing-related context, but also with the office appliances and other domestic equipment, whereas the JANOME brand has a strong connexion with a sewing equipment only.
JANOME’s history is originated from Tokyo in twenties of XX century, at the time when the founder and sewing pioneer Yosaku Ose began using an unprecedented round metal bobbin system instead of the traditional long shuttle system. The round bobbin resembled the eye of the snake, which sounded like Janome in Japanese. Soon the innovative design of the round bobbin system earned the company its name and established it as a leader in the sewing machine industry. In 1935, the JANOME brand was established as an official trade mark, and since then the ‘eye of the snake’ has been staying the symbol of the company. The sign is synonymous to the fundamental value of JANOME – providing advanced sewing machines to customers around the world.
Next decades of the company have been marked with establishing own JANOME’s R&D center, implementing new technologies into practice, and consequently with a vigorous growth of production. In 1960, Janome purchased the well established sewing manufacturer, the New Home Sewing Machine Company, originally founded in 1860, bringing Janome to American soil. Having joined the best achievements and traditions in sewing manufacturing of America, JANOME updated its production facilities and technologies and continued strenghening its business with release of high-technology machines and establishing new representative offices in other countries.
Thus, the year 1968 New Home Sewing Machine Co. Ltd., the future Janome UK, was established; 1969 – the plant in Taiwan which remains the biggest sewing plant up to date was founded. Afterwards, JANOME offices in Australia, Canada, Hong-Kong, the Netherlands and other countries were established. As a result, today there are production facilities, trade offices, research and educational centers of JANOME are throughout the world, and JANOME products can be obtained in more than 100 countries.
Starting with the innovative projects, the mordern JANOME continues its leadership in pioneering the newest technologies. It is JANOME, presenting the world’s first computerized sewing machine Memory 7. And it is JANOME again, in 1900 triumphed with Memory Craft 8000, the first home-use computer sewing machine with professional style embroidery and the Memory Craft 10000 in 2000, which connected to a PC via USB cable.
For those whose choice in sewing is JANOME, it is important to note the manufacture is concentrated in Japan (Tokyo, Yamanashi, Osaka), Taiwan and Thailand (two plants). Trade offices are presented in Japan, the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Mexico and Chile. JANOME has its own R&D center in Tokyo.
